How to Identify good music?

What is good music and how can we identify one? I think I should start off by explaining what good music is. Many people have their own definition of what good music Is meant to be, but not everyone really understand the true meaning of It and how to identify It.

First of all music is an international language which transcends beyond borders irrespective of language barriers. Having said that let me explain what Good Music is. Good Music is any music that stimulates your brain and helps you think clearer. It’s also a music you can listen to for years on end, without getting bored of it. Music that is made with a lot of love, care and time can also be attributed to good music. But the most important factor is the fact that music affects us in different ways. There is no real classification of a good music as long as the music touches us emotionally and makes us feel in a way that we weren’t before.

In my opinion, music is “good” when it touches its audience. If you hear something that catches and holds your interest, then it’s good music irrespective of its genre. But many music critics will argue that music can only be termed good if it’s emotional and carries a message that touches our soul no matter how old the song is. Good music generally is based on perception. In short, I think it’s impossible to define “good music” since it varies for every individual.

So what do we look for in a good composition? Rhythmic grooviness (does it move your ass and head with its rhythm?), melodic diversity (are the notes fluctuating in colorful waves), does it get stuck in your mind but still not annoying (is it catchy yet not cheesy), does it include originality (is it actually a new song or is it some version of an already existing song)? Does it have good chords (does the song have original yet good sounding chord combinations that initiate rich and sophisticated feelings inside)? And much more.

Have you sometimes listened to music that you don’t really understand the language but you still somehow find yourself falling in love with it? That’s what a good music is meant to do because sometimes music is spiritual, it can speak to your without really understanding a word of what is been said in the song. Our understanding of good music in this part of the world is old classics blues records or classical jazz but genre like Apala, Highlife, Fuji, Juju and other local music genre also have a lot of good music which are evergreen and touches it’s listeners one way or the other anytime the songs are played.

I hope with this short written piece of mine I have been able to educate you on what good music is all about and how you can identify it. I also hope it will change our perception to what good music is and appreciate every music as a piece of art. If you know any Nigerian music that can be classified as good music, you can list them in the comment section so we can know the few Nigerian songs that are good music.

Shooting of Tomb Raider Reboot begins in South Africa (See trailer)

Tomb Raider star, Walton Goggins sent out a photo of the Tomb Raider screenplay, teasing that shooting would start soon. This first look image doesn’t feature Vikander or Goggins.

The director shared the photo on Instagram, which features the very first film slate used as production gets under way. While it was never specified where filming will take place, Walton Goggins sent out a number of photos through his Instagram last week, revealing that he has been in Cape Town, South Africa. Although none of his photos were taken from the set. He did state last week in that he would “get to the Tomb Raiding soon,” while sharing a photo of the same fedora hat that was seen in Walton Goggins’ script photo from earlier this month.

Given Walton Goggins’ presence on Instagram, it’s entirely possible that the actor could share a number of images from the set as production continues. MGM and GK Films have not yet released an official synopsis, but producer Graham King did reveal in November that the story will follow Lara Croft searching for her long-lost father, in what the producer described as a “back to the roots story.” Director Roar Uthaug has also previously confirmed that the story is based on the 2013 video game reboot, and not the original game.

The first Tomb Raider movie, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, was released in 2001 and starred Angelina Jolie in the lead role. It also had a portion of the plot centered on her father, with Jolie younger than Vikander in real life at the time. That movie currently is the top-grossing video game movie at the domestic box office with $131.1 million, and a worldwide total of $274 million. The 2003 sequel Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life wasn’t nearly as big of a hit as the first, taking in $65.6 million domestic and only grossing $156 million worldwide. Last year, Warcraft became the highest-grossing video game ever at the worldwide box office with $433.6 million, but it flopped at the domestic box office, earning just $47.3 million.

Roar Uthaug directs from a screenplay by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who may not be a household name, but has become quite the in-demand writer. She was part of the Transformers writers room, and she is currently writing the Harley Quinn spinoff movie Gotham City Sirens as well as the Dungeons & Dragons reboot and Sherlock Holmes 3. MGM has set a March 16, 2018 release date for Tomb Raider, which is currently the only movie slated for release on that date. It will fall between Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph 2 on March 9, 2018 and 20th Century Fox’s Annubis, Sony’s Peter Rabbit and Lionsgate’s Robin Hood on March 23, 2018. Take a look at the first set photo from Tomb Raider, courtesy of director Roar Uthaug’s Instagram, along with Walton Goggins’ Instagram photos from Cape Town, South Africa from this past week.

Star Wars has arrived with Episode VIII- The Last Jedi Teaser

Disney and Lucasfilm unveiled the new official title of Star Wars 8, which is causing altercation amongst the fans.

Except that the iconic Star Wars logo is  red this time instead of New Hope yellow, which accompanied The Force Awakens teaser poster when it arrived way back in 2014. Many have believed that Star Wars: The Last Jedi would be curbing from The Empire Strikes Back in its story telling. But the red letters are giving the movie a distinct Return of the Jedi vibe that has left some fans scratching their heads.

Other fans are perplexed by the title itself. Who is the last Jedi? Wasn’t Luke Skywalker training new Jedi? Luke Skywalker can’t be the Last Jedi because he never finished his training. Oh my gosh, does the red lettering hint that Kylo Ren is the last Jedi, and that he will turn to the good side? Just check any message board in the galaxy right now, and you will see these concerns popping up everywhere.

That said, the title is also winning praise this morning, too, with an equal number of fans excited about the official title reveal. This is one of the first pieces of promotional material that has arrived, and it’s exciting to see that, with Rogue One finally having hit $1 billion at the worldwide box office, LucasFilm and Disney are ready to start the hype train for this next chapter in the Luke Skywalker saga. Upon releasing the official teaser poster for The Last Jedi, StarWars.com made this announcement.

“We have the greatest fans in this or any other galaxy.  In appreciation of the fans, we wanted them to be the first to know the title of the next chapter in the Skywalker saga:  Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman and executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is scheduled for release December 15, 2017.”

No official plot synopsis has been released for The Last Jedi, but many believe the film will track Rey’s Jedi training with Luke Skywalker, as Kylo Ren sets a trap to lure out the Padawan. Kylo Ren will reportedly kidnap Finn, who is on a separate mission with a new friend, and Poe Dameron, who is working side-by-side General Leia, to lure Rey out of hiding. Rey and Kylo Ren are said to have an epic Lightsaber rematch as Luke Skywalker single handedly takes on the Knights of Ren. The movie will also feature the long awaited reunion between twin brother and sister Luke and Leia.

Though Carrie Fisher had finished shooting her scenes for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, there were rumors that her scenes may need to be cut and that a rewrite is in order, as Disney and Lucasfilm will not continue General Leia Organa’s storyline in Star Wars 9 with the use of a CG animated recreation of the iconic actress. No confirmation on how the Leia story will wrap has been made at this time, though director Rian Johnson has met with Disney and Lucasfilm about how to move forward with the ongoing storytelling, which will effect Colin Trevorrow’s Star Wars: Episode IX.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will continue the story and new characters introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Coming back are cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis.  New cast members will include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and talented newcomer Kelly Marie Tran. Take a look at the official teaser poster.
